LGBT+ HISTORY MONTH – MAC x VOGUE RITES
Each February MAC takes the opportunity to educate people on different moments in LGBT+ history and how MAC continues to support the community.
Vogue, or voguing, is a highly stylized, modern house dance gaining popularity in the late 1980’s but it can be traced back long before then. Birthed by the black and Latinx queer communities of Harlem in the 1800’s, the founders of voguing started what is called the ' Ballroom Culture' . Ballroom houses form a safe space where freedom of gender identity and sexuality is allowed. These houses participate in balls, where they compete against each other in theatre performance and dance.
Between the 1960s and 1980s, the city’s drag competitions had transformed from pageantry-style balls to voguing battles. It gained mainstream exposure in 1990 when it was featured in Madonna's song and music video "Vogue" (which MAC created its iconic shade Russian Red for), and when showcased in the documentary Paris Is Burning or more recently the popular series Pose. In its modern form, this dance has become a global phenomenon that continues to evolve both stylistically and demographically.
This LGBT History Month, MAC has partnered with London-based ballroom community Vogue Rites to explore how this dance expression serves as a safe space for LGBT+ people to find family, confidence, self-love and self-expression.

M·A·C COSMETICS EQUAL FUTURES SCHOLARSHIP AT CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS
“The MAC Cosmetics Equal Futures scholarship means that I can create bereft of the stress due to my financial standing. The cards I had been dealt in life have always felt like a burden to me, yet I forever try to use my past as a fuel to ignite rather than to perish in. Fashion has the potential to be powerfully influential. Being part of an industry of such nature excites me, and now I stand together with MAC in this future. I wish this to be a testament of how circumstances do not have to hinder your goal.”

BALLET BLACK
“I founded Ballet Black in 2001 as a direct response to the lack of representation of Black and Asian dancers in classical ballet here in the UK. In the lead up to our first performance, I was searching for high quality makeup that catered to the different skin tones of our dancers, not only for them to wear in performance but so that we could paint our ballet shoes to match our skin colour. Back then, MAC was one of the first brands to offer such products and were also one of the first companies outside of the dance world to support our mission. Fast forward to today, and we are proud to continue our decades long partnership with MAC, upholding the ideals of inclusivity and equality for all.”
